The Story of Britain's Amateur Theatre
Thu 19 March, 6pm
Running Time: 1 hour
Join theatre critic Michael Coveney and guests Michael Simkins, actor and author; Jo Matthews, The Questors Theatre and Vice-Chairman of the Little Theatre Guild of Great Britain; and Ian Wainwright, Project Producer at the Royal Shakespeare Company to discuss the vital story of the major amateur theatre companies and venues that developed over the 20th century in Britain.
On the day of his new book Questors, Jesters and Renegades: The story of Britain’s Amateur Theatre being pubished, Coveney will recount some of the anecdotes and previously unheard stories that show amateur theatre is not just something that serves as a popular pastime: it has been an instrumental part in the development of twenty and twenty-first century professional theatre, and a fascinating barometer and product of the times in which we live.
After the event, Michael Coveney will be signing copies of Questors, Jesters and Renegades: The story of Britain’s Amateur Theatre. When you buy your copy from the National Theatre Bookshop, you support the work of the NT.
