River Stage Festival Weekend: National Theatre

The National Theatre throws open its doors for the final party weekend to close the River Stage 2019 festival. There will be something for everyone including family theatre, dance, music and much more.

Summer pop-ups
While visiting, why not grab a drink or a bite to eat from one of our summer pop-ups? Enjoy a gourmet wood-fired pizza from the Pizza Van, mix yourself a cocktail made of botanical ingredients from the Apothecary bar or grab a cold beer from The Otherstudy riverside pop-up bar. There is something for everyone at the NT this summer.

Concrete Disco

18.30 – 19.30

Concrete Disco take you on an audible stroll through the popular musical stylings that have made up the soundtrack to their lives. Expect the unexpected when the wheels start to turn and strap yourself into your finest pair of dancing shoes as they kick off your weekend with plenty of tasty beats both new and old.

Empire Sounds

19.45 – 20.15

A live set from Tottenham’s Empire Sounds, one of the UK’s hottest Afrobeats collectives and part of the creative team behind SESSION. Rising stars in the urban music scene, Empire Sounds bring their fresh sound to the South Bank.

In this explosive outdoor gathering, Bristol-based performance company Still House joins forces with the Tottenham-based Steppaz Performing Arts Academy and north London’s music production powerhouse Empire Sounds, to create a high-energy night of dance and live music. Produced by MAYK in association with LIFT.

Zilla Nights

21.00 – 22.45

DJ and vinyl collector Blondezilla (Zilla Nights) is back on the River Stage this year, bringing the rhythms of Africa to the Thames. Going back-to-back with her favourite DJ opponent D'Vo, they are set to get you dancing into the night with sweet Afro music; from 70s Ghanaian highlife, Nigerian funk and Somalian grooves, to modern Afrobeats and Kuduru. This year is extra special though, as they have invited traditional drummers and dancers from Ghana for an energetic live performance, to really get the party started!

Mrs H and the Sing-Along Band

Mrs H and the Sing-along Band return to the River Stage with their infectious blend of family music. Their aim is provide quality music for children, that adults will love too. Bring your voices, silly dances, a sprinkling of mischief and don’t hold back from joining in the fun!

Disco Loco

13.30 – 15.45

Legendary DJ and selector Earl Gateshead and Ben Cutter take over the River Stage for a musical tour through the history of reggae, from ska and rocksteady to roots through to dancehall and dub – hear the tunes, listen to the stories and learn the different dance moves from across the eras.

Step Change Studios

15.45 – 16.15 workshop, 17.45 – 18.00 performance

Join award-winning inclusive dance company Step Change Studios for a fun fusion of ballroom and contemporary dance. Participate in their workshop for all ages and abilities and see a brand new performance piece created for NT River Stage in collaboration with US artists from Karen Peterson Dancers. Baddies, Bears and Balloons – Mr Gum at the Theatre

16.30 – 17.00

Andy Stanton, author of the hilarious and award-winning Mr Gum series, talks about writing his new musical for the NT, reads from his books and basically runs around spouting nonsense for the delight of you and your family. Laughter, silly voices and surreal flights of fancy guaranteed!

Summer Space to Create

17.15 – 17.45

60 young performers, six days, one bold new show.  Led by puppetry innovators Brunskill and Grimes, this is your chance to watch the final sharing from Summer Space to Create. Summer Space to Create is part of the National Theatre’s Young People’s Programme, where young performers aged 16 – 21 collaborate with professional theatre-makers to create experimental new work.

London’s coolest choir, Some Voices, bring iconic summer sounds to the National Theatre's River Stage. Known for their killer set lists, expect raucous arrangements, brooding rock ballads and sing-a-long to pop medleys performed live by a 30-strong choir.

DJ Paulette

DJ Paulette is one of the first ladies of UK house music, who tells us that she has still ‘Got the Love’, because music has her absolute ‘Respect’. She plays home and away, straight, gay, back room/main stage, disco, funk, soulful, house and tech and instinctively knows how to make any party jump. She wowed the River Stage last year and is looking forward to the rematch 2019.

Yoga Class with Hannah Rudd

12.30 – 13.30

Suitable for people wanting to increase strength, flexibility and stamina, this class is based in the Vinyasa flow style of Hatha Yoga. Postures are sequenced together to create a fluid, moving meditation.

This workshop will be an hour-long creative dance exploration for families, using imagery, storytelling, props and music, to have fun dancing together.
