The Effect Shadowing Opportunities

About the opportunity

The Effect is written by Lucy Prebble and will be directed by Jamie Lloyd opening in the Lyttleton Theatre in August. If you would like to find out more about The Effect please visit the show page. 

Participants will get a chance to get an insight into the creation of this new production, shadowing industry professionals and getting hands-on experiences in one of the following disciplines:

– Directing

– Sound/Music

– Stage Management

  • Please only apply using the forms linked to below.
  • You will have the option of answering a few short questions or uploading a short video
  •  Please complete your application by  Monday 19 June 9am. 
  • Interviews will take place from the later part of that week.
Placement  Dates

Placements will take place between 26 June 2023 and 11 August 2023. The duration of each placement will vary. Specific hours will be flexible but will be approx. 25 hours per week including occasional evening work.

This is a paid opportunity, paid at London Living Wage of £11.95 per hour.

Eligibility
  • These placements are for young people who are currently underrepresented in backstage roles; therefore we particularly welcome applications from disabled people, people from the global majority (meaning people who are Black, Asian, mixed heritage or indigenous to the global south), neurodiverse people, women, and those from working class backgrounds.
  • You must be aged 18 – 25.
  • The placements are based in central London and will involve evening work, therefore please think about how you will travel in and out of London.
  • This programme is for those at the start or early on in their careers. It is not designed those who are undertaking or have completed formal training or degree courses in any of these areas, or a related area.
  • We are particularly keen to hear from people who have had limited access or no access to arts opportunities in the past, as we are committed to removing barriers which may exclude some people from accessing opportunities in theatre.
Accessibility
  • The placement location will be in central London near London Bridge and will move to the National Theatre in Waterloo for the final weeks.

Directing

  • Are you interested in seeing a rehearsal process in a theatre?
  • Are you aged 18 to 25?

The National Theatre and The Jamie Lloyd Company are looking for an individual to shadow Jamie Lloyd as he directs  The Effect at the National Theatre in London. This is an opportunity for people who have an interest in the theatre making process.  A shadow is when you follow and observe a particular person, in this instance Jamie Lloyd the director of The Effect.  If you would like to see inside a rehearsal process and learn how a show comes together this is the opportunity for that.

You will:

  • Follow the production in rehearsals offering an insight into a director’s process as well as the process of putting together a production
  • Learn about working with creative teams, actors and the wider technical teams
  • Be mentored by Jamie Lloyd
  • Be supported by the NT’s workforce development and production team

This placement will begin on week commencing 26 June 2023, there is no flexibility within the start date, other dates are to be confirmed. Please specify in your application if there any dates you are unavailable

Music and Sound

  • Are you interested in making music?
  • Are you aged 18 to 25?
  • Want to know about how the music and sound on a play works?

The National Theatre and The Jamie Lloyd Company are looking for an individual to shadow George Dennis (Sound Designer) and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante as they work on creating sound and music for The Effect at the National Theatre in London. This is an opportunity for people who have an interest in the theatre-making process and can show that they have an interest in sound and/or music. A shadow is when you follow and d observe a particular person, in this instance the sound designer and composer of The Effect.  If you would like to see inside a rehearsal process and learn how a show comes together this is the opportunity for that.

You will:

  • Shadow and observe a number of rehearsals, getting an insight into the process of putting sound and music together for a production
  • Have an opportunity to speak to the composer and sound designer about their roles on the production
  • Meet the sound and music departments and learn more about the roles available
  • Be supported by the NT’s workforce development and production team

You must be available for the rehearsal and technical periods of The Effect ,exact dates are to be confirmed . Please specify in your application if there any dates you are unavailable.

Stage Management

  • Are you interested how theatrical productions are organised?
  • Are you aged 18 to 25?
  • Want to know about how what happens on stage in a play comes together?

The National Theatre and The Jamie Lloyd Company are looking for people are looking for someone to shadow the stage management team as they work on creating The Effect at the National Theatre in London. This is an opportunity for people who have an interest in the theatre making process and lots of enthusiasm.  A shadow is when you follow and observe a particular person, in this instance the stage management team of The Effect.  If you would like to see inside a rehearsal process and learn how a show comes together this is the opportunity for that.

You will:

  • Shadow and observe a number of rehearsals getting an insight into the process of putting together a production
  • Have an opportunity to speak to the stage managers about their roles on the production
  • Meet the wider production team and find out more about the roles available
  • Be supported by the NT’s workforce development and production team

You must be available for the rehearsal and technical rehearsal period of the The Effect, exact dates are to be confirmed. Please specify in your application if there any dates you are unavailable.
