Explore the backstage life of the National Theatre.

The National Theatre is a working building, producing around 20 new productions every year. Rehearsals, prop and costume-making all happen on site. No two tours are ever the same, so come and see what’s happening behind the scenes today.

NT Future
The National Theatre is changing – inside and outside, in our public spaces and behind the scenes, as part of an £80m redevelopment called NT Future.

We have chosen to keep tours running whilst this exciting work is ongoing, but there may be some changes to the spaces that can be visited and the times that tours can run.

Join us after curtain down for your chance to stand on stage after the show.

Tickets £6 (no reductions). Tour last about 35 minutes.

Please note these tours are all in the Lyttelton Theatre after the performance of Ballyturk (ends 9.05pm)

UP LATE at the National Theatre
Your chance to see the Olivier from a new perspective. 

Tickets £10 (no reductions). Tour lasts 45 minutes. 
Next tour date: Tuesday 2 September at 9.15pm  

  • After the performance, the tour takes you up over the auditorium and stage via the lighting bridges and to unseen backstage areas
  • Not suitable for anyone with concerns about confined spaces or being at height
  • There are many changes of level and stairs on the route 
  • Appropriate footwear (no high heels or flip-flops) must be worn and bags must be left at the cloakroom
  • We regret we are unable to take any visitors under 18 years of age on this tour
  • Please, no alcohol before the visit (you will be asked to confirm this before the start of the tour) 
  • Retain your tickets to receive 15% discount in House, our new restaurant, or the Terrace bar afterwards

Family Tours - Half term and holidays
Specially tailored backstage tours for you and your family, available during the school holidays. 

  • Visit unseen and backstage areas
  • Handle props from previous productions
  • Try out some costumes – maybe Mr Toad's prison uniform from The Wind in the Willows

Tickets £8.50 – for each paying adult up to three children go free.
Tours last approx. 60 minutes and are suitable for children aged 5-12. The National Theatre is a working building and we regret that we cannot take children under the age of 5.

Costume Tours
Selected Saturdays, 10am, £12.50
See the craft and skill of the NT’s costume team including the cutting room, dye shop and wig room. Approx 2hrs.

All tours bookers receive 25% off in the Espresso Bar and 15% off in the NT Bookshop.
