‘we’re here because we’re here’ saw over 1400 voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in locations across the UK on Friday 1 July 2016, as a modern memorial to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. www.becausewearehere.co.uk (opens in new window)

Conceived and created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller in collaboration with Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre, it was commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.

Jeremy Deller, Rufus Norris, Senior Associate Director Emily Lim, and Jenny Waldman, Director of 14-18 NOW, discuss this unique one-off event – its genesis, journey and delivery – with Lyse Doucet, Chief International Correspondent for the BBC.
