Toby Olié

Toby Olié is a director, designer and puppeteer who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He is co-artistic director of Gyre & Gimble, a theatre company specialising in puppetry.

At the National: The Elephantom (co-director/puppet designer), Peter Pan, The Light Princess, Hansel & Gretel (puppet designer), War Horse (associate puppetry director, also West End). He was the hind of Joey in the original production of War Horse and played the heads of both Joey and Topthorn in the West End transfer.

Other theatre includes: Don Quixote for the RSC and in the West End; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at the Royal Ballet; The Wind in the Willows at the Royal Opera House and in the West End; The Little Mermaid for Disney Theatrical in Holland, Moscow and Tokyo; The Grinning Man at Bristol Old Vic and in West End; Running Wild at Chichester, Regent’s Park and on UK tour; A Christmas CarolThe Lion, the Witch and the WardrobeThe Firework-Maker’s Daughter and Peter Pan at Chichester; Little Shop of Horrors at the Royal Exchange; The Secret Garden at Sarasota Ballet; and Goodnight Mister Tom in the West End and on UK tour. As director his work includes The Elephantom at the National and in the West End; Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons: A Reimagining at Shakespeare’s Globe; and The Hartlepool Monkey for Gyre & Gimble on UK tour.

Work as a puppeteer includes Joey in the original production of War Horse at the National and in the West End (also associate puppetry director); Venus and Adonis for the RSC; and Angelo at Little Angel.
