Steve Pretty

Steve is a performer, composer and music producer. As the front man of Hackney Colliery Band (‘one of the greatest live bands that we have in this country’ - BBC Radio 2), he has co-produced five critically-acclaimed albums and toured extensively for 12 years, including a sell out ‘Collaborations’ show at Barbican Hall in 2019. He is Musical Director for Robin Ince and Brian Cox’s live shows at the Hammersmith Apollo and Royal Albert Hall, for which he has arranged and performed music with everyone from astronauts to The Cure, via Eric Idle. In 2019 and 2021 he was Musical Director and orchestrator for A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe. Aside from his work with Hackney Colliery Band, his music production work includes Carnatic Connection for Bollywood Brass Band/Jyotsna Srikanth (one of Songlines magazine’s top world music albums of the past 10 years) and work across multiple genres including hip hop, chamber music, jazz and techno. He has performed and/or recorded with Sir Paul McCartney, Kelis, Angélique Kidjo, Mulatu Astatke, Sam Smith, Jarvis Cocker, Damon Albarn, Amy Winehouse and many more.

As a composer/arranger productions include: A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe; First Impressions at Theatre Royal, Margate; Santa Clause Science Experiment at Bloomsbury; and Annabelle’s Skirtingboard Adventure at the Edinburgh Festival fringe and on UK tour.
