Theatre First

Introduce your youngest pupils to theatre & performance

This innovative learning programme invites Year 1 pupils to take an active role in a unique storytelling performance at the National Theatre. During the first half of the summer term 2017, classes will work with professional theatre artists who will introduce and explore different aspects of theatre in performance. At the end of the project the children will be invited to take part in an interactive storytelling performance at the National Theatre incorporating their work.

The children were thrilled to go into a National Theatre and be involved with the performance. Having parents coming along was great too, as the children felt really special…. taking part in a real performance alongside real actors  has deepened their understanding  of  what is involved as well as increased their confidence, and provided unforgettable experience. Year 1 Teacher

It has given me the confidence to be more ambitious with music and movements rather than relying on words to tell a story or create a scene.  I will definitely bear this in mind when putting together class assemblies and productions at school. Year 1 teacher

The programme includes:

  • CPDL for teachers
  • In-school workshops on different aspects of theatre led by professional artists
  • A visit to the National Theatre for the unique and interactive performance
  • Opportunities to engage parents in their children's learning
  • A cross-curricular scheme of work to deliver around the project

The project is open to London state primary schools.

Cost: £300 per class

Bursary Support
The National Theatre wants to ensure that a wide range of schools can take part in the NT Learning Primary programme including those for which the programme costs present a significant barrier to participation. For Primary Theatre we offer a limited number of bursaries providing a significant reduction in cost. Should you be interested in applying for a bursary and would like to find out more about whether your school would be eligible, please contact Amy Powell on the number or email above.
