What is the National Theatre Schools Collection?
The National Theatre Schools Collection is an exciting new digital service which will make the very best of British theatre available to students in state-funded schools in the United Kingdom, free of charge.  Students will be able to experience a range of extraordinary productions from Shakespeare and Greek tragedy to literary adaptations, all made by world-class theatre-makers. Production recordings will be accompanied by learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists.  The National Theatre will be working in partnership with Bloomsbury to deliver the service, which will be available from January 2020.

Is the NT Schools Collection different to National Theatre On Demand In Schools?
Yes. The NT Schools Collection will draw on ten years of NT Live broadcasts alongside Archive recordings which have never before been seen outside of the National Theatre Archive, allowing us to share a larger and more diverse selection of productions. There will be 19 productions available from January 2020, with another 11 available from March 2020. We intend to continue to grow the collection in the future with additional educational resources and further titles.

What’s happening to National Theatre On Demand in Schools?
National Theatre On Demand In Schools will continue to be available to UK state-funded schools until July 2020. All schools currently signed up to the service will receive an email in January 2020 explaining how to sign up to the NT Schools Collection.

Is the NT Schools Collection a free service?
Yes, the service is free of charge to all state-funded schools in the United Kingdom.

How do I sign up?
We will send an email to all schools currently signed up to NT On Demand In Schools detailing what you will need to do to sign up to the NT Schools Collection.  If you are not already signed-up to NT On Demand In Schools, you will be able to sign-up to to the NT Schools Collection when it launches in January 2020.

Do I have to belong to an educational organisation to access the NT Collection?
Yes, the NT Collection is available exclusively to educational institutions.

What plays are available on the NT Schools Collection?
The collection will feature a broad range of productions which will support teaching and learning across the curriculum and give students access to inspiring live theatre.

  • Students studying English will be able to experience Shakespeare set texts including Macbeth, Othello, King Lear and Twelfth Night, in vibrant modern stagings. They’ll also be able to see novels come alive on stage in exciting literary adaptations including Frankenstein.
  • For those students studying drama and theatre studies, there will be a range of theatrical styles and genres, from Greek tragedy to 20th century classics. They’ll be able to see and study the work of extraordinary contemporary practitioners and theatre-makers.
  • Students on technical theatre and production arts courses will be able to see and compare examples of extraordinary design and theatrecraft in productions ranging from She Stoops to Conquer to One Man, Two Guvnors.
  • Primary school teachers will be able to introduce their pupils to Shakespeare, with vibrant adaptations of Romeo and Juliet and The Winter’s Tale, created specially for younger audiences.
