Facilities Technician Apprentice: Ryan Thompson

2019 - present

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship?

I believe that an apprenticeship is the best way to learn and gain qualifications as you gain site experience while avoiding student loans. You will also have an established company and experience which you can put on your CV for the future.

What new skills have you learned during your time at the NT so far?

I have gained the ability to complete tasks in a working environment with the skills l learn at college. I've also learnt how to work with the public and co-workers.

What has been the most exciting show/project you’ve worked on?

The most exciting projects are when I gather evidence for the NVQ section of my course by completing tasks using the skills I have learned at college.

What has it been like to help the NT to adapt during this unique time in its history?

My department has split itself into two teams in order to comply with the COVID19 work regulations. It has been very challenging to look after the building with only half of the team in when a full team is usually what is required to keep the building running in normal cases.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge came when lockdown began as it has limited me with gaining practical experience at the moment and I am needing to adapt to changing schedules.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?

I would highly recommend as it allows you to gain work experience without having to finance your own education. It also puts you at a great advantage when looking for work once the qualification is completed.

Do you think it is important that the NT offers apprenticeships?

Yes, as it gives people the opportunity to work and gain an education in a good environment. It also allows the NT to train employees that they can take on in the future.

What do you hope for the future once you have finished your course?

I'm hoping that I'm able to continue to work at the NT for a while to continue to gain more experience, under full time employment.
