His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh

HRH Duke of Edinburgh visits the National Theatre backstage and is talking to members of staff

1921–2021

We are deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family.

The Duke of Edinburgh visited the National Theatre on several occasions with The Queen. These included the official opening of our South Bank building in 1976 and, most recently, in 2013 to mark the NT's 50th anniversary. The photo above shows the Duke of Edinburgh meeting production and technical staff in the newly opened Max Rayne Centre during his visit in 2013.
