Watch This Space

Welcome to Watch This Space 2009

  • Welcome to your guide to Watch This Space – the National Theatre’s annual summer festival of outdoor theatre, circus, music, dance, comedy and film on the Southbank until 27 September.

This year we welcome an outstanding range of national and international artists who bring to life various spaces on and around Denys Lasdun’s iconic building. The giant playful installation, ‘Armchair Theatre’, will be back for your comfort, providing you with the best seats in (or outside) the house to watch the summer unfold in Theatre Square.

We’re crossing our fingers and hoping that the Met Office’s long-range weather forecast proves true: “For the UK and much of northern Europe rainfall is likely to be near or below average. A repeat of the wet summers of 2007 and 2008 is unlikely… temperatures are likely to be above average.” So, hopefully umbrellas will be kept to a minimum, as this year is one of our busiest seasons ever.

  • Week 1
  • Circus Space is the UK's premiere circus school. They'll be rehearsing in the Square each day and then performing short preview extracts. There will also be Taster Day Workshops on Saturday afternoon.

  • Week 2
  • Artistic Director of Upswing, Vicki Amedume, leads an exciting week of aerial activity in Theatre Square. Vicki's current project, Loved Up, is a lively expression of youthful romance on bungees, with a heavy breakdance influence. There will also be open floor sessions and workshops. Filming will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 11 July for Matthew Robins vs. The Eyeders. It will involve being chased down the street by giant spiders (you will have to imagine them). No fee, but refreshments will be provided. Then come and watch yourself being attacked onscreen on 22 August on the NT Flytower as part of Matthew's season here. Email Matthew at someone@sadlucy.com for more information.
