19 November 2008

Kenneth Branagh has been named as the winner of the Stage Performance category at the Variety Club's 56th Annual Showbusiness awards.

The actor picked up the accolade for his performance in the title role of the Donmar Warehouse's production of Ivanov.

Branagh plays the title role in a new version of Antov Chekhov's play, reworked by Tom Stoppard.

The play tells the story of Ivanov, a man who falls out of love with his wife and into a self-destructive relationship with the daughter of a wealthy friend.

Speaking at the awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House on November 17th, John Sachs, Variety Club Showbiz chairman, said: "The Variety Club Showbiz Awards are the oldest and most established awards in the UK that recognise outstanding talent in the field of entertainment."

Meanwhile, the West End production of the musical Hairspray won the award for Musical Theatre.

The musical opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 30th (after previewing from October 11th) and is still running.
