Theatre critic Clive Barnes dies

20 November 2008

The well-respected theatre critic Clive Barnes has died after a long battle with cancer aged 81.

Known as a critic of both dance and drama, he wrote for numerous publications including the New York Times, the New York Post as well as the Times and the Spectator in the UK.

Born in London in 1927, Barnes was educated at Oxford University and was a journalist in the UK before heading to the US during the 1960s.

Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the New York Post, described Barnes in a statement as "a genuine legend".

"For 30 years as a critic for the New York Post he wrote with honesty and a delightful whimsy. Clive's colleagues and the readers he served for so long are impoverished by his passing," he stated.

He wrote numerous books on ballet and theatre including biographies of Tennessee Williams and Rudolf Nureyev and four volumes of the 50 Best Plays of the American Theatre.

Barnes' last review was of a Broadway revival of Speed-the-Plow by David Mamet.
