20 November 2008

Newley – the Fool Who Dared To Dream opens tonight (November 20th) at the Upstairs at the Gatehouse theatre, following previews from November 18th.

Written and directed by Pete Gallagher, the production is due to run at the venue until November 30th.

The musical tells the story of the singer Antony Newley, drawing on personal accounts from those who knew him including his writing partner Leslie Bricusse, co-star Anna Quayle, his agent Peter Charlesworth and his children Sacha and Tara.

Newley was an entertainer who enjoyed a career as a recording artist and actor and whose songwriting credits included lyrics for the theme to the Bond film Goldfinger as well as co-writing the music for cinematic adaptation of 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

David Boyle plays the role of Newley while the rest of the cast includes Anita Markham, Kate Eason and Victoria Hart.

Forthcoming productions at the theatre include World War Two espionage story Breaking the Code by Hugh Whitemore.
