Jonathan Croall on Sybil Thorndike
Sybil Thorndike’s glittering career memorably included appearing in the 20s as Shaw’s Saint Joan and as Hecuba in Gilbert Murray's translation of Euripides' Trojan Women, and later with Olivier in Uncle Vanya and The Prince and the Showgirl. She named Shaw, Murray and her husband Lewis Casson as the three great mentors of her life.
She was also a committed socialist and pacifist, and a passionate advocate of a National Theatre, speaking John Masefield's Ode at the laying of the foundation stone in 1951.
Biographer Jonathan Croall talks about this remarkable woman to Murray's great-granddaughter and Guardian columnist, Polly Toynbee.
