Theatreworks Partnerships opens up the National Theatre and its work through a variety of participatory activities. It works within the South Bank local community and with community groups that operate within neighboring boroughs. Each project is delivered by National Theatre in-house creative teams and specialist Theatreworks facilitators.
Crisis – Commedia Project
Theatreworks Partnerships worked with the homeless charity Crisis on a project exploring the art form of Commedia dell’Arte as used in the National Theatre’s production One Man Two Guvnors. The project was opened out to members who access Crisis services. The group explored the principles of Commedia with a specialist director over a five day period which culminated in a short performance shown to an invited audience at the Crisis Skylight centre in Bermondsey.
'I just want to thank you for organising the Commedia work shop at Crisis during the last week of our summer school. It was absolutely fantastic, the group had everyone in hysterics with their antics and you could see how much they were enjoying the experience. One of our members who worked with [the facilitator] all week told me afterwards how much he enjoyed the workshop and he now wants to study drama.'
Paula Lonergan, Crisis Creative Arts Manager
In response to the National Theatre production of People Theatreworks Partnerships worked with a group of older people, who access services from Age UK Lambeth & Southwark, to develop a response to the production inspired by the themes of home and belonging. The group worked with a director and a designer to produce a performance which was shown to an invited audience of friends and family.
'First of all I want to thank you for inviting us to the National Theatre, to watch People that was a dream come true. The workshops were fantastic I really enjoyed them. It was interesting working with those young and vibrant directors and producers. They really made me feel good and have given me the confidence to be my own self, I appreciate that.'
