The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

by Jay Presson Allen (1998)

newly revised version adapted from the novel
by Muriel Spark (1961)

'You girls are my vocation… I am dedicated to you in my prime'

Fiona Shaw returns to the National to play one of the great creations of post-war literature.

Jean Brodie is a schoolmistress with a difference - proud, cultured and romantic, her ideas are progressive and radical.

When she decides to transform a group of young girls into the crème de la crème of Marcia Blaine school, 'the Brodie Set' feel honoured and privileged - but in return she expects their undivided loyalty…

Based on Muriel Spark's celebrated novel, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a disturbing portrait of adolescent trauma
and lost innocence.

Fiona Shaw was recently seen in
TS Eliot's The Waste Land and at the National in Richard II and The Way of the World. The latter was directed by Phyllida Lloyd, whose other work includes What the Butler Saw (National and on tour), Dona Rosita (Almeida) and Hysteria (Duke of York's).
