The Book of Everything
by Peter Tabern
based on a novel by Guus Kuijer
in the English translation by John Nieuwenhuizen
The Book of Everything is about faith and hope and finding the courage to be happy. For Thomas, happiness starts with not being afraid, and growing up to be happy is his ambition in life. This doesn’t seem like much of a goal to his Father until he finds himself exposed as a bully and a hypocrite, a man too ready to raise his hand to his family in the name of God. Thomas strikes a blow in favour of life.
Peter Tabern’s BAFTA award-winning screen adaptations include Feather Boy, Stig of the Dump (2002 International EMMY Award for Children’s Drama) and Johnny and The Bomb, all for BBC. He has also written episodes for Sky TV’s Hex. Current work includes his adaptation of David Almond’s Clay recently screened on BBC1, and an original thriller series, The Last Van Helsing, on ITV later this year.
Performed by Castle Youth Theatre, Wellingborough
The search for identity pulses through New Connections 2008: for acceptance and survival in modern Britain, for racial equality in 1960s South Africa, by deception in magical allotments, during white-out in a snow blizzard, through parenting, through faith, or by comic mistakes of social networking.
The Book of Everything finished on: 7 July 2008
