Platforms and Audio Recordings

The NT Platforms Department run an eclectic programme of pre-performance events that celebrate all aspects of the arts, offering the chance to learn about the National's work and discover more about theatre in general. The Archive holds audio recordings of these events dating back to the late 1970's and made a consistent HD video record of these since 2007.

Having completed the digitisation of our platform audio collection the recordings are now available to researchers on-demand via the National Theatre Digital Archive system (NTDA) in the archive; some transcripts are available in Backstage/Platforms, and in printed transcript form from NT Publications in the NT Bookshop. Since engaging with the BBC-led Creative Archive initiative to release archival collections to the public in digital form we have run a popular audio and video podcast service releasing current and past recordings.

For most productions at the NT the collection includes talks with writers, directors, actors and all involved in realizing productions at the National Theatre; they offer an insight into the various working methods practiced in theatre over the last 30 years and complement our performance video recording collection. The Archive Catalogue contains full listings for our collection of Platform recordings and details of all Platform performances. See Catalogue to search the Archive collection.

The British Library Sound Archive holds audio recordings of every show the National Theatre has ever staged; these are available to consult at the main British Library building at St Pancras. View the British Library Sound Archive at www.bl.uk.
