The London Cuckolds
by Edward Ravenscroft (1681)
in a new adaptation
by Terry Johnson (1998)
Three beautiful wives, three ludicrous husbands and one overly ambitious rake are the seductive and comic ingredients of this splendidly irreverent farce.
When it was first performed in 1681, The London Cuckolds was an instant success. Its unique mix of wit and outright rudery made it enormously popular and the play was revived annually for more than seventy years, making it the Restoration comedy precursor to today's long-running British farces.
Three centuries later, Terry Johnson's fresh, frank and fruity adaptation proves that this seminal sex comedy can still be celebrated for its humour, honesty and outrage.
This is Terry Johnson's first production at the National. His previous plays include the award winning Hysteria, Dead Funny and Insignificance.
The London Cuckolds finished on: 11 August 1998
