Operating the drum
The main function as an operator is to command and control the four components of the 'Drum', via the control desk.

Under show conditions the operator is required to programme to the desk, all relevant data specific to each cues' stipulation. In a single cue each piece addressed will move to a specified position at an exact speed and chosen direction.
At present the inputting of values for every cue is a somewhat time-consuming task. However, a 'sequencing' programme is currently in development that will enable, at the touch of a button, the loading of all applicable data congruous to each cue.
Whilst programming and executing cues is a large part of the operators job, it is also imperative that s/he is continuously aware of what is happening on stage and ready to react to any unexpected event that may occur during a show.
A flying piece not moving for example, can affect an entire sequence. It is therefore under the operator's jurisdiction to make an appropriate, but swift response to any unforeseen circumstances.
It is also crucial for the operator to remain vigilant to the safety of both the actors and stage staff throughout; monitoring access to and from the drum and keeping a close eye on their positioning.
Finally, it remains to say that as custodian of such a complex system, a sense of respect is paramount.
