The National Theatre is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames at a point called King's Reach. Denys Lasdun, the architect of the National, noted that from this vantage point it is possible to 'pick up a panorama of the City of London that stretches from St Paul's round to Somerset House and on to Hawksmoor's towers at Westminster Abbey. It's a magical position… probably the most beautiful site in London'.
