Annual Review 02/03
National Theatre 2002/03
2002/03 must have been one of the most challenging years in the NT's history. The Transformation season, as this Review makes clear, was at the heart of the challenge. It was a crowning achievement on the part of Trevor Nunn and all those concerned to have brought it off with such a successful artistic and financial outcome.
2002/03 was the last of the six years of flat-out dedicated work that Trevor has devoted to the National Theatre as its Director. In his time, the NT has garnered a vast crop of awards, brought many into the Theatre for the first time, sponsored much new writing (no fewer than 60 new plays and adaptations), succeeded in developing an outstanding ensemble, and preserved its financial stability in a way the Board could hardly have hoped for six years ago. Since 1997 it has mounted a series of varied and memorable productions in which Trevor himself has played an indispensable part, leading from the front in a way wholly appropriate for one of the finest directors of our time. The last of his many great services to the NT was the facilitation of a smooth transition to Nicholas Hytner as his successor and the playing in of a new Executive Director, Nick Starr.
These achievements collectively are the fruits of a great artistic Directorship. On the Board's behalf - indeed, on behalf of all those who have so much enjoyed or contributed to the NT's output in the Trevor Nunn era - I thank and congratulate him for leading the NT with such success and style, both fully worthy of the National Theatre's remarkable history since its birth.
