Primary Theatre
for Key Stage 2
Primary Theatre is an annual programme aimed at classes in state primary schools at Key Stage 2 that takes place in the Spring Term.
It aims to introduce children to theatre and performance through a top-quality touring production alongside an innovative learning programme with a different focus each year.
For Primary Theatre 2012 the focus is on the development of literacy skills with a particular emphasis on the development of children's enjoyment, engagement and achievement in writing. The programme includes a series of 5 workshops delivered in school by our team of National Theatre Learning Associates alongside creative lesson plans for teachers. Two CPD days and specially designed teacher resources are also offered to support the programme.
This year's production Island was a new play for young audiences by Nicky Singer, whose books for children and young adults include the Blue Peter Award winning novel Feather Boy which was dramatised by the BBC and went on to win a BAFTA for Best Children's Drama. The production toured to schools from 18 January 2012 and also played for two weeks in the Cottesloe Theatre from 15 - 25 February 2012.
For Primary Theatre 2013 the programme will focus on a production of a Shakespeare play specially adapted for a primary audience. Recruitment for the programme in 2013 will start in July 2012. However, you can register your details to receive updates on all of NT Learning's projects and events for schools and teachers.
