Jocelyn Herbert
Jocelyn's family have been among the judges for the Award, alongside two leading stage designers - Hayden Griffin for 2003 and 2005 and Bob Crowley for 2007 - both of whom were close friends of Jocelyn. The Judge for the 2009 Jocelyn Herbert Award is Tim Hatley.
The judges look for an individual imagination able to produce a fresh but focused interpretation, and for a candidate who will use the prize money to further their knowledge of working in the theatre. The judges keep in mind a quote from Jocelyn when they look through the students' work:
"For me, there seems no right way to design a play, only, perhaps, a right approach. One of respecting the text, past or present, and not using it as a peg to advertise your skills, whatever they may be, nor to work out your psychological hang-ups with some fashionable gimmick."
