The Pitmen Painters episode in the Discover Programme's play now series of documentaries on every play performed at the National Theatre currently has the following sections:

  • on location: Michael Hodgson visits the Woodhorn Colliery Museum in Ashington to find out more about the lives of the Pitmen Painters.
  • take two: Chris Connel and Ian Kelly talk about the pivotal relationship between their two characters in the play.
  • key scene: Chris and Ian, and Deka Walmsley and Brian Lonsdale, talk about their characters' reactions to seeing Oliver Kilbourn's painting of 'The Deluge' for the first time.
  • on topic: Looking at one of the play's themes, that of class.
  • making theatre: How has the play changed during its runs, and what are the cast looking forward to about touring it to different cities round the UK?

Forthcoming features in subseqent releases of the documentary will include:

  • Interviews and artistic insights from William Feaver, whose book on the Pitmen Painters was the basis for Lee Hall's play.
