The Cherry Orchard

by Anton Chekhov, in a version by Andrew Upton

A vibrant adaptation of a stage classic.

‘Wonderfully fresh, funny and deeply felt. One of the finest ensembles I have ever seen at the National.’ Daily Telegraph

Zoe Wanamaker plays Ranyevskaya, who returns almost bankrupt from Paris to her Russian country estate. There, she and her brother are faced with a stark choice: to sell their beloved cherry orchard or throw their lives into turmoil.

This acclaimed production is directed by Howard Davies, whose recent productions include Olivier Award-winning The White Guard, and All My Sons in the West End.

Until 13 August

Emperor and Galilean

by Henrik Ibsen, in a new version by Ben Power

A dazzling historical epic.

‘A brilliant rendition of Ibsen's play... breathtakingly staged. Andrew Scott gives an heroic performance as Julian.' Guardian

Through vivid storytelling, Emperor and Galilean sweeps across Greece and the Middle East, covering 12 crucial years in the history of civilisation, and dramatising the actions of Julian: one man who could have changed everything forever.

Staged with thrilling flair and featuring a company of fifty, the production is directed by Jonathan Kent, who was last at the NT directing Ralph Fiennes as Oedipus.

Until 10 August

A Woman Killed with Kindness

by Thomas Heywood

A startling domestic thriller.

Two women fight for their emotional survival in a rural wilderness dominated by men, money and an unbending morality.

A Woman Killed with Kindness strips bare two women’s lives – with forensic realism – in one of the first tragedies ever to be written about ordinary people.

Katie Mitchell, whose exquisite work includes Waves, The Seagull, Pains of Youth, and Women of Troy, creates a radical new production set in the 1920s.

12 July – 11 September

The Kitchen

by Arnold Wesker

A fast and furious workplace drama.

1950s London. In the kitchen of an enormous West End restaurant, the orders are piling up. Chefs, waitresses and porters argue and flirt as they race to keep up. But in the all-consuming clamour of the kitchen, nothing is far from the brink of collapse.

Arnold Wesker’s extraordinary play - which has been performed in over 30 countries - is directed in a new production by Bijan Sheibani.

From 31 August
