The Tragedy of Thomas Hobbes opens

18 November 2008

A Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production of The Tragedy of Thomas Hobbes is to open at Wilton's Music Hall tonight (November 18th).

Previewing from November 12th, the UK premiere of Adriano Shaplin's new history play will run at the venue until December 6th.

It is set in London in 1658 following the end of the Civil War and the death of King Charles 1st and tells the story of the philosopher Hobbes, who battles with younger scientists to ensure his ideas are heard.

Directed by Elizabeth Freestone, the play features a cast made up from the RSC's Merchant Of Venice and The Taming Of The Shrew productions, which were staged in Stratford-upon-Avon during the summer.

Adriano Shaplin is a writer, actor and director and co-founder of The Riot Group.

He has written and acted in all of their original productions, including Pugilist Specialist.

It received The Scotsman's First of the Firsts award at the Edinburgh Fringe 2003.
