Hassan Abdulrazzak wins Meyer-Whitworth Award

3 November 2008

The 17th annual Meyer-Whitworth award has been won by Iraqi-born playwright Hassan Abdulrazzak.

He was named as the winner for his play Baghdad Wedding, which ran at the Soho Theatre from June 28th to July 21st in 2007.

The playwright was presented with a cheque for £10,000 at a ceremony at the National Theatre.

Judges on the voting panel for the award included director Richard Eyre and actress and producer Thelma Holt.

Speaking to the Stage, Mr Abdulrazzak said winning such a prestigious award was a surprise.

"We have had little bit of trouble in trying to take this to the US, because obviously with a first-time playwright it is more risky, but I hope that now that it has won two awards it will give it a better chance," he told the news provider.

Baghad Wedding was named as the winner of the George Devine award in June.

Supported by the Royal National Theatre Foundation through an annual prize of £10,000,The Meyer-Whitworth was set up to help further the careers of UK playwrights who are not yet established.

Previous winners of the prize include Philip Ridley for The Fastest Clock in the Universe and Diane Samuels for her play, Kindertransport.
