Stolen Shakespeare works returned to the UK

30 October 2008

A volume of William Shakespeare's works, reported to be worth £400 million, has been returned to the UK ten years after it was stolen.

The book resurfaced in June when a man walked into a library in Washington claiming to have happened upon it in Cuba.

A pair of detectives from Durham Police's crime team accompanied the folio back to the Ukafter interviewing a number of people in the US.

The owner, 51 year-old Raymond Scott was arrested during a raid and has been released pending further questioning when he appears in court again in November.

He is mounting a legal campaign in a bid to have the book returned to him, which he claims he received by legitimate means.

Professor Chris Higgins, vice-chancellor of Durham University, said: "We are pleased the Shakespeare First Folio is back in Durham and we await the outcome of the police investigation."

The collection is thought to have been one of the first of Shakespeare's works to have been produced in 1623.

Experts believe only 250 copies of volume are still in existence.
