Waiting for Godot to return to the West End

31 October 2008

Samuel Beckett's existential classic Waiting for Godot is to return to the West End with Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in the lead roles.

The production is due to run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from April 30th to June 28th following a nationwide tour beginning at the Malvern Theatre on March 5th.

Arguably Beckett's most famous play, Waiting for Godot will be directed by Sean Mathias, who has been announced as the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company's artistic director for the 2009 season.

It follows two days in the life of Vladimir and Estragon, a pair of tramps who try and distract to themselves while waiting for the mysterious Godot to appear.

Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart first worked together in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Tom Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Favour in 1977.

They went onto feature in the Hollywood blockbuster X-men.

Previously, Sean Mathis has directed numerous productions including Uncle Vanya with Sir Ian McKellen at the National Theatre.
