Everyman Theatre to be knocked down and replaced

29 October 2008

The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool is to be knocked down and a replacement venue built in its place.

As part of a £41 million initiative is planned to construct a new theatre, which theatre chiefs say will retain the original ethos and ambience.

The project includes a refit of its sister venue, the Playhouse, with £6 million in funding having been secured from the Arts Council.

More money is expected to come from government and European agencies as well as a further proportion from charitable and public appeals.

Phil Redmond, deputy chairman and cultural director at the Culture Company, told the Liverpool Echo: "The Everyman and Playhouse have done some fantastic theatre in some terrible conditions and we do need to get started with providing one decent producing theatre to go beyond 2008."

He added that although The Everyman is the spiritual home for theatre in Liverpool, the city also needs a multi-performance space.

Architect Steve Tompkins, who worked on the restoration of the Young Vic, has contributed an initial design for the new venue.
