Roof of the Globe Theatre to be rethatched

22 October 2008

The roof of the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in south-east London is being rethatched, according to reports.

Master thatchers Phil Campbell and Kit Davis, who undertook the original roof work in 1996, are to manage the work on the venue.

It is expected to require 10,000 English hazel securing spars to cover the roof space and a further 800 bundles of sedge for the thatching process.

More than ten thatchers will make up the maintenance team and are expected to use 2,500 feet of thatching strip or liggers and 600 litres of fire retardant fluid over the course of the four-week refurbishment.

The Globe, which first opened to the general public in 1997, will remain open during the course of the work.

It has a capacity of 1,500 people per performance and an estimated quarter of a million people visit it during its five month performance season.

When it opened, the theatre was the first building to have a thatched roof since the Great Fire of London in 1666.
