A one-off performance of A Little Night Music is to feature mother and daughter Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson playing the same roles on stage as parent and child.

The performance of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Tony Award-winning musical will take place on January 12th 2009 at the Roundabout Theatre Company benefit at the Nokia Theatre Times Square in New York.

Directed by Scott Ellis, the pair will play the parts of Madame Armfeldt and Desiree Armfeldt in the musical.

Other cast members include Victor Garber as Frederick Egerman, Christine Baranski as Countess Charlotte Malcolm, Laura Benanti as Anne Egerman and Marc Kudisch in the role of the Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm.

The musical follows three lovestruck couples as they lose – and find – each other during a long midsummer night on a country estate and will feature a 27-piece orchestra.

It originally opened at Broadway's Shubert Theatre in 1973.

Directed by Harold Prince, the production won five 1973 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical.
