Dawn Walton to head Eclipse Theatre

16 October 2008

Eclipse Theatre, an organisation established to encourage black British drama, has appointed Dawn Walton as its first artistic director.

She has been given the role to develop Eclipse both artistically and strategically with her first project being director of The Hounding of David Oluwale.

The production is a docu-drama portraying the life of Nigerian immigrant David Oluwale in Leeds during the 1970s.

It will open at the West Yorkshire Playhouse before touring nationwide.

Commenting on her appointment, Ms Walton said: "I am delighted to have been invited to become its artistic director and I look forward to working with the partner theatres to lead Eclipse into its exciting future."

Previously, she worked as acting head of studio at the National Theatre.

Nick Starr, executive director of the National Theatre, said: "I am delighted that Eclipse has found such an experienced, connected and talented new artistic director in Dawn."

Earlier this year Eclipse staged a production of Angel House by Roy Williams.

It opened the New Wolsey Theatre's season in February before touring nationwide.
