Guys and Dolls to be revived in 2009

12 October 2008

A revival of the classic musical Guys and Dolls is to open on Broadway in New York, with the Tony Award winning Des McAnuff as director.

The production, which is based on various short stories and characters by crime writer Damon Runyon, was first performed on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre in 1950.

Oliver Platt, who received a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in Conor McPherson's Shining City, will play the protagonist Nathan Detroit.

Des McAnuff told Playbill: "Guys and Dolls may well be the greatest musical of all time; it is inarguably one of them."

"I consider it a tremendous responsibility and a wonderful opportunity to direct it on Broadway. It has been a career-long goal of mine," he said to the news provider.

The musical, which features a classic score by Frank Loesser, will open at the Nederlander Theatre in New York on March 1st.

A celebrated production of Guys and Dolls, directed by Richard Eyre, was produced at the Royal National Theatre in 1982 with Bob Hoskins as Nathan Detroit, and was revived in 1996 with Henry Goodman in the role. ADNFCR-1741-ID-18819643-ADNFCR
