Matthew Broderick to return to Broadway

12 October 2008

Matthew Broderick is to return to Broadway to feature in a production of Christopher Hampton's play The Philanthropist by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the American Airlines Theatre.

It will be the first time the actor, who is known for his roles in Hollywood films Ferris Bueller's Day Off and on Broadway in The Producers, has returned to tread the boards since 2005 when he acted in The Odd Couple.

He plays an insular college professor called Philip in the play, struggling to keep his life in balance while, in the outside world, the prime minister and his cabinet have been killed.

The production is due to open on April 26th 2009 with previews beginning on April 10th, directed by David Grindley.

Mr Broderick has had roles in a number of other plays including Brighton Beach Memoirs, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Biloxi Blues, Night Must Fall, Taller Than a Dwarf, On Valentine's Day, The Widow Claire and Torch Song Trilogy.

Previously, The Philanthropist was seen on Broadway in 1971 and featured performances from Alec McCowen, Jane Asher and Victor Spinetti in its 64-date run.

In 2005 it was produced in London at the Donmar Warehouse with Simon Russell Beale in the title role, also directed by David Grindley.
