Birmingham's Old Rep Theatre reopens

10 October 2008

The Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham has reopened following a refurbishment programme costing £500,000.

Various changes made as part of the modernisation include fitting of better disabled access and improving the building's bar, box office and toilets.

The venue's Young REP company celebrated the relaunch with a production of Twelfth Night, which was the first play performed at the theatre when it opened 95 years ago.

Councillor Ray Hassall, cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: "The Old Rep is a vital part of Birmingham's cultural history, and has played host to a wealth of big names and historic productions."

He added that renovating these areas of the theatre should ensure it can be enjoyed for many more years to come.

The Birmingham Stage Company's production of Skellig, a book by David Almond, will open the Old Rep's Autumn/Winter season.

It won the Carnegie Medal and the 1998 Whitbread Children's Book Award.

Michael Morpurgo's Why the Whales Came will grace the stage over Christmas.
