Sunday shows coming to the West End

2 October 2008

Theatre bosses are thought to be nearing an agreement which would see theatres in the West End opening their doors on a Sunday.

Following a year and a half of negotiations, actors and producers are being advised to accept the recommendations by workers' unions in exchange for a rise in the minimum weekly wage.

The acting union Equity originally opposed the suggestion to hold performances on Sundays due to the lack of pay for its members.

However, if the new terms are accepted then performers at theatres with over 1,100 seats will receive a minimum rate of £550 per week.

Those at 800 to 1,099 capacity will get £500 with £450 being offered to actors in smaller theatres.

Speaking to the Stage, Stephen Spence, Equity assistant general-secretary for theatre and variety, said: "The new deal provides a different way of doing things in the West End and a new framework moving forward."

Meanwhile, the organisers of the Laurence Olivier Award are looking for ten theatre-goers to complete the judging panel.
