Theatre to stage plays using natural light

30 September 2008

The Bush Theatre in London has responded to its ongoing electrical difficulties by unveiling a season of events performed under natural light.

Electrical problems have meant the venue has had no light since August and will continue to be in the dark until a "host of surveyors" have visited.

The theatre has reacted to the problem by organising the Broken Space Season, a series of nightly triple bill performances featuring work from Neil LaBute, Mike Bartlett, Simon Stephens and Bryony Lavery.

Josie Rourke, artistic director of the Bush Theatre, told Whatsonstage.com writers were excited by the idea and could not wait to be involved.

"Sometimes the only light the audience will see throughout an entire performance will be a smouldering cigarette - it's going to be an incredible atmosphere," she told the news provider.

All of the plays are to be performed in a particular state of light – including at dusk or in total darkness.

The Bush Theatre has an estimated 40,000 visitors every year.
