Oedipus
by Sophocles
in a new version by Frank McGuinness
Oedipus is one of the most famous stories from classical Greek literature and one of the greatest tragedies ever written.
The play begins as the people of the Greek city of Thebes look to Oedipus to lift a terrible curse from them and their city. After consulting the oracle Oedipus learns that he must root out the late king's murderer to lift the curse. Over the course of a single day, he relentlessly interrogates one man after another to seek out the man he is looking for, only to reach a tragic and horrifying conclusion:
You are who you are seeking to find.
This is a new version of the original Sophocles text by playwright Frank McGuinness. Oedipus is played by Ralph Feinnes, most famous for his film work including The English Patient for which he was Oscar nominated. The cast also includes Clare Higgins as his mother Jocasta, recently seen at the NT in Major Barbara.
