Three theatre spaces
-
Cottesloe
The Cottesloe Theatre is the smallest and most flexible of the National's three theatres.
-
Lyttelton
The Lyttelton theatre is a contemporary proscenium arch theatre, notable for its particularly wide stage. It is a key space for launching the NT's touring productions.
-
Olivier
The Olivier Theatre seats well over 1000 people in a semi-circular sweep inspired by ancient Greek amphitheatres. Under Nick Hytner's directorship of the National, it is particularly often used for 'state-of-the-nation' plays or other large-scale public dramas.
-
Running the theatres
Nick Hytner's job as Director of the National involves overseeing work in all of the three theatres, as well as everything that happens in the building more generally.
