The Motley Theatre Design Course exhibition
The exhibition showcases a selection of theatre designs by this year's eleven students, and is an opportunity to view the process behind designing for the stage. It is in the National Theatre’s Paint Frame (the entrance is near the Cottesloe Theatre) and entry is free.
Wednesday 23rd July – Saturday 26th July, 11am – 8pm & Sunday 27th July 11am – 4pm
Over the last year each student has collaborated individually with professional theatre directors to complete the set and costume designs for five plays and an opera. Set in a variety of venues ranging from The Royal Court, NT and the Grand Theatre, Leeds to The Young Vic and The Bush, a collection of their designs will be on view at the exhibition and will include those for: Incident at Vichy, St Joan of the Stockyards, The Misanthrope, The Winters Tale, Experience, a new play by Linda Marshall-Griffiths and The Flying Dutchman.
The students have also worked together on a project at The Sir John Soane’s Museum which will form part of the exhibition alongside examples of their artwork.
The Motley Theatre Design Course, is recognized internationally for the quality of its teaching and graduates having provided the theatre, film and television industries with many talented designers. Currently based in a studio behind the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the independently run course is led by the theatre designer Alison Chitty and taught by practicing theatre professionals. This year these have included: John Burgess, Charles Edwards, Matthew Dunster, David Edwards, Edward Hall, Matthew Lloyd, Mike Leigh, Jonathan Munby, Lindsay Posner and Simon Usher
The students exhibiting are: Sarah Bacon, Patrick Cahill, Kate Guinness, Maria Fernanda Guirao, Andrew Lennon, Sally Malkin, Lucy Read, Yann Seabra, Guilia Scrimieri, Aleš Valášek and Jessica Wiesner.
