The Pitmen Painters
by Lee Hall (the writer of Billy Elliot)
inspired by a book by William Feaver
The Pitmen Painters, written by Lee Hall, the man behind Billy Elliot, received four star reviews when it originally opened at Live Theatre, Newcastle in 2007, and was a sell-out success.
The play tells the story of a group of North-Easter miners in 1934, who hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. They soon start painting themselves and within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine.
On the back of this success, the production now transfers to the Cottesloe Theatre here at the NT and has already sold out.....except, that is, for our exclusive allocation of tickets for Entry Pass members. Watch this space for more details coming soon.
