Alaa Al Aswany & Maya Jaggi - Free The Word! International PEN

International PEN presents FREE THE WORD!
A Celebration of World Literature

As part of International PEN's festival taking place around the South Bank from 11-13 April, the National Theatre hosts the opening event with Alaa Al Aswany, and a late-night literary cabaret in the Late Lounge.

Alaa Al Aswany - The Writer Next Door

Egyptian author and practising dentist Alaa Al Aswany talks about his work. He caused an unprecedented stir when The Yacoubian Building was published in 2002: this explosive portrayal of characters and lifestyles in modern day Egypt remains one of the world's bestselling novels in Arabic.

Alaa Al Aswany will be in conversation with Maya Jaggi, award-winning critic and leading voice on world literature for the British media.
