Sheridan's telling of the Peruvian struggle for independence against the Spanish is now virtually forgotten, but offers a fascinating insight into Sheridan the politician, with sections of a legendary parliamentary speech against the high crimes of the Governor General of Bengal transposed to the rallying cries of Commander Rolla.
