Il Campiello was written for the Venetian Carnival of 1756.
"It became necessary to enliven the scene, and I gave towards the end of autumn a Venetian comedy entitled Il Campiello. This campiello, the square which is the place of the scene and is never changed, is surrounded by little houses inhabited by the working class where gaming and dancing and hubbub takes place. Sometimes it is full of gaiety, sometimes the scene of quarrels. Il Campiello gave great pleasure. It was all taken from the working class but the truth of the picture was recognised by everybody; the high and low were satisfied with it for I had accustomed my audience to prefer simplicity to tinsel and nature to the efforts of the imagination." Goldoni
