In 1830s Donegal, British troops attempt to map the landscape and convert the Irish place-names to the King’s English. For the local headmaster, his sons and the handful of Gaelic-speaking villagers, their actions have irrevocable and far-reaching consequences.

Brian Friel’s compelling observation of a vanishing rural community weaves an intricate tale of language, love and politics.

Brian Friel’s other plays include Aristocrats,
Faith Healer and Dancing at Lughnasa.

‘A modern classic. It engages the intellect as well as the heart’ Daily Telegraph
