An Enemy of the People

by Henrik Ibsen (1882)

in a new version by
Christopher Hampton (1997)

When Dr Stockmann attempts to expose a conspiracy in his home town, he faces the conniving of politicians and the hostility of the community he is trying to protect. He appeals to a public meeting - only to be shouted down and reviled as 'an enemy of the people'.

Ian McKellen's work at the National includes Uncle Vanya (1992) and 1990 productions of King Lear and Richard III (also a successful film).
